Vohaul's escape pod ended up in an ugly garbage freighter! How do I
get out of this place?
Three screens right and one screen down from the dead pod is a trash pit
which contains Roger's faithful ship for this adventure, the Aluminum Mallard.
You'll need to use it to escape the freighter. Walk three screens to the
right of the pod, stand next to the huge robot head, then climb into the
broken eye to find the trash pit and the Mallard.
When I tried to stand by the robot head, I fell through the rusted deck!
You'll have to be careful to stand just under the head's broken eye lens.
When you are directly under, type "climb into eye".
How do I get into the ship in the trash pit below the head?
You'll need a ladder to get on top of it. You can find one in the rats'
lair, accessible via the vertical conveyor belt one screen south and one
screen east of the escape pod. When you have the ladder, put it down beside
the ship and climb it. When you're on top of the ship, be careful not to
fall off. Open the hatch, and climb into it.
I'm at a screen with a vertical conveyor belt. Is it used for something?
Why, of course; it's used for hauling trash up to a grinder. Okay, fine,
I'll get serious; you need to take a ride on it. Stand as close as you
can to the belt, and one of the buckets on it should snag you and carry
you up.
The vertical conveyor belt dumped me on a horizontal one that's heading
toward a grinder!
In situations like this, movement can be very helpful; get the message?
Stand up, then jump, and Roger will climb up onto the rail above him.
When I tried to go to the right side of the rail where it curves around,
I fell off and died!
You can't go there! This rail was made for some sort of car to travel on,
not a human to walk on! Head left instead.
I've found a control room with some car attached to the rail and a robot
working the controls, but the robot keeps spotting me and eliminating me.
How come?
You're wasting too much time here. The robot collects junk, and he doesn't
take lightly to organic material aboard his ship. You'll have to do something
instead of just standing around. That car that you see on the rail is called
a grabber. Walk over to where it's hanging and type "get in grabber".
You'll need to use it to get off somewhere.
How do I get the grabber to move?
Look at its controls. Use either the mouse or arrow keys to control the
grabber's direction.
Where do I need to get off the grabber?
You need to get off in a certain place in the control room. See that blue
platform that extends out toward the south side of the rail? Stop the grabber
there, then type "exit grabber" to get off and onto the platform,
then walk south.
I just fell into a pit where some creepy looking rats are staring down
at me. What's to be done here?
Notice the power cord strung between the lights. Trace it to where it leads
into a hole on the west wall. Walk up to the hole and look inside it, then
take the portable reactor you see; you'll need it. Walk over to the ladder
and climb it, then when you come out in the screen south of the escape
pod, take the ladder, which you'll need to get into the Aluminum Mallard.
I got into the Mallard, but I don't know what to do or how to move around!
To get in the pilot's seat, click the mouse on it, and to get back out,
click the mouse on the passenger area. The first thing to do in the ship
is to take a look at the computer in the passenger area. It will inform
you of the ship's status.
The ship is missing a power source! Where can I find one?
Remember the rats' lair, where you picked up the ladder? There's a small
portable reactor in a hole in the west wall there (you may need to look
around in the wall for it). That's what you'll need to power up the ship.
Once you have the reactor, enter the ship and type "use reactor"
to install the reactor in the open panel on the ship's deck.
I am going to have to go all the way up the conveyor and on the rail to
get back to the rats' lair?
No. Remember where you came out of it? Make sure you have the ladder, then
go back to that screen and find your way through the trash to the spot
where you came out, then put down the ladder and climb down it.
Hey! Some big rat mugged me when I was walking through the tunnel! Why?
Because you took his reactor, and he doesn't like it when people just leave
the lights off in his pit. Making sure you are carrying the ladder, take
the shortcut back to his pit and look in the hole in the wall. The reactor
will be back there, along with the wire, if you were carrying it. Take
it, and if need be, the wire, then exit the pit, take the ladder, and head
back to the ship. This time, the rat won't mug you.
I installed the reactor in the ship, but the power cable is too short to
reach it!
You'll need to extend the cable slightly. If you don't have it, there's
a piece of wire in the tunnel formed by the old space tanker. (If you took
it before and are missing it, go back to the rats' lair and look in the
hole on the west wall; the rat that mugged you took it.) Go to the tunnel
and walk to the place where there are loose wires hanging down from the
wall. Take the piece of wire, then go back to the ship and once inside,
type "use wire" to successfully hook up the reactor.
The ship has power, but it still won't fly! What's wrong?
Try checking the ship's diagnostic computer again. The ship seems to be
missing its warp motivator. The computer will show you a picture of one.
Where can I get a warp motivator?
You've already seen one. Remember that odd looking round object on the
floor in the screen with Vohaul's dead escape pod? That's the warp motivator.
I tried to pick up the warp motivator, but it's too heavy to carry.
Well, at least for a human to carry. What about a machine? Remember the
grabber, the neat little car on the rail above the freighter's floor? You're
going to need to use it to "carry" the warp motivator. Oh, before
you do this, make sure you have the ladder; otherwise, you won't be able
to get out of the rats' lair after exiting the grabber!
How DO I use the grabber to pick up the warp motivator?
Look at its controls, and you'll notice a button for lowering its claw.
When you are located above the warp motivator, type "lower claw"
to pick it up. If you miss, just try going to another spot and lower the
claw again until you have it. Then ride the grabber until you're above
the Aluminum Mallard, and lower the claw to install the motivator in its
compartment. If you miss, search for the spot until the motivator is successfully
installed. If you can't locate where these places are, the screen with
the warp motivator and the escape pod is just east of the freighter's control
room, below the north side of the rail, and the Aluminum Mallard is located
under the south end of the rail, in the screen where the rail curves at
the east end of the freighter.
The ship is all ready to fly, now how do I fly it?
First of all, sit down in the pilot's seat, and look at the main computer
screen in front of you. Click the Radar button to turn the ship's radar
on, then click the Engines button. Once the engines have fired up, click
the Takeoff button.
I crashed into the ceiling of the freighter while taking off!
The ship needs to be able to detect the ceiling, which it couldn't. Before
taking off, make sure that the radar is on.
The ship's just hovering in the garbage freighter. What now?
Don't you want to get out of there already (hint, hint)? Turn on the weapons
system using the respective button, and press Fire to blast a hole in the
freighter and get out.
When I fire at the wall of the freighter, I get killed! Why is this?
Because you fired at close range, and the impact of the shot blew the Mallard
up! Before firing, click the button for either front or back shields, and
you won't die.
I made it out of the freighter, but I'm going nowhere.
When flying aimlessly, try setting a course. Look at the screen again,
and click the Navigation System button to bring up the ship's hologrid.
Use the scan button until the place you wish to go to appears on screen,
then click the Set Course button, and return to the main screen. When you're
on the main screen, click the Lightspeed button to fly to the set destination.
Where do I go to after I've left the freighter?
Whatever you do, don't go to Ortega yet! You need to go to Phleebhut first,
then Monolith Burger, then Ortega.
When I blasted into lightspeed, a ship containing some nasty looking android
followed me!
This is all part of the game. The android's name is Arnoid, and he's a
hulking terminator unit. In case you didn't know, Roger received a mating
whistle in SQ2 in the mail without paying for it, and Arnoid's been sent
to get rid of him for mail fraud. You'll meet this bozo on planet Phleebhut.
I flew to Phleebhut, but I don't know how to land.
Try the handy computer screen in front of you, dumbbell! Press the Land
button to touch down.
How do I get out of the ship?
Get out of the pilot's seat! Fine, I'll be more specific. Get out of the
pilot's seat and press the red button on the right side of the ship to
lower the entry ramp.
A scorpazoid keep killing me on the surface of Phleebhut.
You have no choice but to avoid it. Whenever the scorpazoid appears on
the screen, duck into another screen, then return, and the scorpazoid probably
will be gone. If it isn't, leave and return until it is.
A big snake keeps on eating me! What's the deal?
The second you enter the screen with the snake, leave. Be sure not to venture
too far south from now on, because there's no way of passing the snake.
I got killed by lightning!
You can't go too far north on the surface of Phleebhut, or this will happen
to you again. Stay away from the storm.
Guess what? I have no money to buy anything at that nice tourist trap,
World O' Wonders!
You won't get very much money this way, but try searching the seat cushion
of your ship to find a few buckazoids. To get substantial money, you'll
need to do something at World O' Wonders. Have you taken a gander at Fester
Blatz's display case? He sure likes collecting odd rocks and gems to sell.
Back on the planet Labion in SQ2, Roger found a glowing gem beneath a swamp.
He's still carrying it, despite the fact that it's lost its glow. Show
the gem to Fester, and he'll be extremely interested in purchasing it.
Sell it to him when he makes his offer. If you wish, you can refuse Fester's
first two offers, then accept his third offer to receive maximum buckazoids.
What exactly do I need to buy from World O' Wonders?
Periodically, Fester holds up his three specials of the day: an orat on
a stick, an Astro Chicken hat, and a pair of Thermoweave underwear. You
need to buy the underwear and the orat, but you don't need the Astro Chicken
hat, unless you want maximum points.
Are the postcards important?
One of them is for Ortega, a planet you'll be visiting later. Read the
postcards until you come to the one on Ortega, the message on it gives
you a tip-off to buy the Thermoweave underwear that Fester's holding up.
Arnoid the terminator caught me outside World O' Wonders! Was this meant
to happen?
It sure was.
I can't get back to my ship before Arnoid catches me!
You can't escape, eh. Well, that's too bad. It looks like you're going
to have to get rid of him.
How do I kill Arnoid?
If you want maximum points, go one screen west of your ship to find a rock
overhang with some pulsating, pod-like creatures attached to it. Walk under
the overhang, but not directly under the pods, and stay there. Arnoid will
walk carelessly under the overhang trying to catch you, and the pods will
eat him. If you don't care about maximum points, you can kill Arnoid a
different way. To the west of World O' Wonders is a door in the left foot
of the mog, the big metal godzilla. Quickly walk in it, because Arnoid's
footprints appear on the screen very fast. Get in the lift, then press
the button in it to go up to the mog's generator room. Walk up the stairs
and over to one of the pulleys, then wait there, facing the stairs. When
Arnoid comes up and gets close to the gears, grab the pulley, and Roger
will hit him with it. Arnoid will be knocked into the generator and crushed.
Wait for Fester to come up in the lift, then let him give you a ride down.
Once you have killed Arnoid either way, remember to get his invisibility
belt that is left behind with his remains.
I can't get Arnoid's invisibility belt without being eaten by the pods!
The pods are so hungry that they'll eat any being that walks under them.
You'll need to extend your reach using a certain item. The orat on a stick
from World O' Wonders is what you need to snag the belt from under the
pods. Stand near the remains, but not right next to them, and type "use
orat" to get the belt.
I have no money for food! Where do I get some?
You need to head to Phleebhut in the Mallard and go to World O' Wonders.
When you're there, sell the proprietor Fester your glowing gem to get a
load of buckazoids (see hints above).
What do I need to do at Monolith Burger?
Go up to the empty counter on the west side where the green alien is working
and type "look at menu".
What should I order at Monolith Burger?
Order a Monolith Fun Meal, then pay the clerk, walk over to the empty booth,
and type "eat".
I found a decoder ring in my burger! What's it for?
Have you looked at it and seen the strange symbols on it? You'll need it
to decode the secret message in the Astro Chicken game here.
Astro Chicken is extremely hard! I need help!
If Astro Chicken goes to fast, try slowing the speed of the game down.
When playing, don't hold up to flap or Astro Chicken will crash on his
pad. Press up to start flapping, and press it again to stop.
Is it necessary to play Astro Chicken?
Not really, but the game will give you a clue about your upcoming mission
if you play it ten times.
I found some sort of secret message in the Astro Chicken game, but I can't
read it.
You should have ordered a Monolith Fun Meal and gotten the decoder ring
inside it. Look at it while the message is on the game's screen and you'll
be able to read what the message says by matching up the symbols.
How do I get back into my ship from Monolith Burger?
Enter the right airlock and type "enter ship".
When I walked out of my ship onto Ortega's surface, I melted! How do
I prevent this?
Ortega is simply a very hot planet, so you'll need something to cool you
down. You can get a pair of Thermoweave underwear on Phleebhut from Fester
Blatz, the proprietor of World O' Wonders. Before you walk out of your
ship, remember to wear the underwear.
I've found a weird-looking spaceship, but I can't get to it.
You're right. It's a Scumsoft ship, and it tells you that some Scumsoft
guards are somewhere nearby.
I found a campsite with a bunch of seismic equipment, but the guys there
shoot me with a jello ray!
Just in case you weren't aware, your mission in this game is to save the
Two Guys from Andromeda (a.k.a. Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, the Space
Quest designers) from the clutches of Scumsoft Software. This is a Scumsoft
campsite, and the guards here don't like uninvited visitors. Wait behind
the rocks at the top of the screen until the guards leave the planet, then
examine the site.
What do I need to do at the Scumsoft campsite after the guards have left?
Take a look through the telescope and you'll see the huge domed building
that houses the cloaking ray that is making the moon of Pestulon invisible.
Take a look at the open crate on the ground, and take one of the thermal
detonators inside it. Finally, take the pole from the wind gauge and head
to the right.
I found a huge domed building in a volcano crater. How do I get to it?
You see the large opening in the rocks to the right of the screen? Go there
and walk around until you find a spot where Roger can get through.
I'm at the base of the large building. What do I do?
Starting from the platform that you came into the crater on, go west down
the stairs, then east around the machinery housings back to the screen
with the platform, then over to the ladder going up the side of the building,
which you need to climb up.
I'm at the top of the big building. What now?
Have you decoded and read the message in the Astro Chicken game at Monolith
Burger yet? If not, you may want to. If so, you know what to do here. This
is the building that houses the cloaking ray that is making the moon of
Pestulon, where Scumsoft Corporation is based, invisible and undetectable
by ships' scanners. If you can destroy the cloaking ray, you will be able
to pilot the Mallard to Pestulon. Destroying the ray is easy, if you got
a thermal detonator from the crate at the Scumsoft campsite. Walk over
to the edge of the hole where the cloaking ray is coming out, then drop
the detonator into the hole.
The lava bridge I crossed earlier crumbled, and I can't get back to the
Mallard!
Oh yes you can! You can pole vault across the chasm! You should have the
pole from the wind gauge at the campsite. Type "pole vault across
chasm" to get across.
Ortega exploded before I could escape from it!
You can't waste any time after you've destroyed the cloaking ray. Hurry
back to the Mallard!
I can't find Pestulon on my scanners!
If you're complaining about this, you probably haven't read the secret
message in the Astro Chicken game at Monolith Burger yet. If not, do so.
If you did, then you're pretty dumb to be asking this question! You need
to go to Ortega and destroy the cloaking ray there before you can detect
Pestulon and fly to it. Once you're off Ortega and the ray is gone, scan
until you see Pestulon, then go there.
I can't approach Scumsoft headquarters on Pestulon without the guards shooting
me!
Remember that cool invisibility belt that Arnoid had back on Phleebhut?
You should have it in your possession right now; if not, go back to Phleebhut
and get it! You'll need to wear the belt to evade the guards. When you're
invisible, wait until you're asked what you want to do, then click "Enter
Scumsoft". In front of Scumsoft, hurry inside, the belt is very low
on power!
I put the invisibility belt on, but I didn't disappear!
Sorry, you're just going to have to turn it on...lamebrain! Once it's on,
wait until the game asks you what you want to do, then click "Enter
Scumsoft". Hurry inside the building, the belt is very low on power,
and will run out if you don't!
How do I get through the door at the bottom of the Scumsoft stairs?
Try pressing the button by it!
What do I do inside the circular hallway?
If you're having trouble moving and stopping at different doors in there,
slow the game's speed down. Go into the other door on the "hub"
of the hall to find a janitor's closet. Look at the floor inside to find
a pair of coveralls. Take them and put them on, then go through the unlocked
door (the one without a keycard reader) on the right side of the hall.
When I entered the Scumsoft accounting department, I got zapped by security.
Of course you did! You think those nerdy little guys want someone like
you just wandering around Scumsoft? You'll need a disguise. Go into the
janitor's closet in the circular hallway, and look at the floor in there.
Take the pair of coveralls you find and wear them to disguise yourself
as a Scumsoft janitor.
I'm disguised, but no matter where I go in the accounting department, I
still get caught.
Apparently the employees don't think you're a legitimate janitor, because
you're not doing your job! In your inventory is a trash zapper that you
found in the pocket of the coveralls when you put them on. Use it to take
care of the full wastebaskets in the accounting department. To shoot the
trash, stand by the desired basket and type "zap trash". Remember
to empty all the full trash baskets on the way to where you're going; missing
one will result in death.
I've found the boss's cubicle, but the boss is in. What should I do?
How about that? The boss is just a nerdy teenager. His name is Elmo Pug,
and you'll have a chance to get more intimate with him later. If you haven't
already, empty his wastebasket, then leave the screen and come back. Elmo
will be gone, but he will have left his personal keycard lying on his desk.
Take it.
The Mallard is in Scumsoft's vehicle bay! How can I get to it?
You can't, at least not right now. You'll be able to later.
I can't open the door with the keycard reader in the hallway!
That's because you don't have a keycard, pal. You'll need to get one from
the boss, Elmo Pug. Go to the screen in the accounting department with
his office, leave it, then return. He'll be gone, but his personal keycard
won't. Take it and use it on the door's reader.
I used the keycard on the reader, but I didn't pass the facial scan that
the reader performed!
Well, gee, I wonder why? Maybe it's because you don't look like the boss,
Elmo! Go to the left side of the accounting department and take the picture
of Elmo hanging there. Go over to the copy machine nearby and photocopy
the picture, then put the picture back on the partition. Go to the hallway
and use the keycard again. When the reader tells you that it's going to
scan, hold up the copy of the picture to fool the scanner and allow you
access.
When I tried to carry the picture of Elmo out of accounting for the scan,
I got caught! Why?
The employees are a little suspicious that somebody working for Scumsoft
would take a picture. See the copy machine near where the picture hangs?
Use it to photocopy the picture, then put the picture back on the partition.
Use the photocopy of the picture to fool the scanner.
I see the Two Guys from Andromeda, but I can't get to the platform they're
on.
Notice how the other doors have buttons by them to extend a bridge? There's
one by the door you came through, too; you just can't see it. Type "push
button", and Roger will push the button to extend the bridge.
I can't figure out how to free the Two Guys from Andromeda from the blocks
of green jello they're trapped in.
You didn't forget about your faithful trash zapper, did you? Stand by the
blocks and zap the jello. Presto!
Elmo caught me and took me to his arena to play Nukem Dukem Robots. Now
he keeps on killing me!
Be careful; every wasted move is a waste of your life meter. Remember,
press J to punch and M to block. The best thing to do is to let Elmo try
to punch you, and block all his punches to drain him of life.
I vanquished Elmo at Nukem Dukem Robots and escaped from the arena and
Pestulon, but now he's sent his fighter ships after me! How do I avoid
getting blown up by them?
You'll have to shoot five of them in a row in order to avoid being killed,
turning the shields on and firing when necessary. Just before the fighters
come, look at the screen and press the Attack Speed button, then press
the Weapons System button and activate rear shields to be prepared.
I can't figure out how to shoot the fighters.
When the radar tells you that a ship is approaching in the rear, use the
arrow keys or mouse to align the crosshairs with it to lock onto it, then
fire. Make sure you hit all five fighters in the rear before they can hit
you twice, and block the four frontal attacks in between; an extra hit
to the shields beyond eleven will result in death. Save and restore periodically
during this sequence until you have successfully gotten rid of the first
nine fighters.
I can't lock onto the fighters. Why not?
You may not have attack speed on. Restore to a game before the fight has
started, and activate attack speed.
When I try to shoot the fighters in the rear, they blow me to pieces!
You need to put your rear shields up whenever a fighter approaches from
the rear.
A fighter in front of my ship crashed into me and I died!
You can't shoot fighters in the front of the Mallard, so you'll have to
save yourself another way. When the radar informs you that a fighter is
approaching in the front, activate front shields.
I escaped from the Scumsoft fighters, but my navigation system has been
disabled, and I'm heading nowhere!
Click above the screen or (I think) press return to return to the view
of the entire ship. The Two Guys from Andromeda will screw with some equipment
and get you moving toward earth (in the past), where the two guys find
employment at Sierra with Ken Williams. Aren't you glad you finished the
game?
